Week #4 vs. Springfield (S.H.G.) 4-0
9/17/2004
Polecat Pounding
JACKSONVILLE - Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (#2 AP Class 5A) dominated on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball en route to a 42-14 thrashing of the Jacksonville Crimsons (#5 AP Class 5A).
The Cyclones, utilizing the unorthodox "Lonesome Polecat" formation, confused the Crimson defense all evening long. SHG senior quarterback Eric Peterman completed 12 of 20 passes in the formation for 205 yards and 1 TD, all of which came in the first half. The Northwestern-bound QB also rushed for 48 yards and 4 TDs. WR Tony Nevins (5 catches - 93 yards), TE Jeff Sanders (2 catches - 36 yards), WR Kevin Corcoran (4 catches - 67 yards) and RB Sean Tapocik (1 catch - 9 yards) hauled in Peterman's passes. The leading ground gainer for SHG was RB George Minor, who rushed 9 times for 109 yards.
Prior to tonight's game, the Jacksonville defense had not surrendered a single point in 10 quarters of play.
The Cyclone defense created just as much havoc, coming up with several sacks, forcing fumbles, and harassing QB Brian Anderson all game-long. Led by DEs Joe Henriksen and Drew Tate, the SHG defense forced the Crimson offense out of its rhythm early and often. They held a Jacksonville offense which came in averaging 42 points per game to just 14.
Sacred Heart-Griffin, which is now ranked #17 in the nation by The Sporting News, will take on Lincoln Community next Saturday.
