2005 Week #7 In week 7 the JCHS Panthers will try to do something for only the second time this season, and that is to win back to back games. The Panthers travel to Troy IL. for a Mississippi Valley Conference battle, as they try to even their conference record at 2-2 and improve to 3-4 over-all. Jersey has been successful in the past while on the road playing the Knights. Two years ago the Panthers hung on to defeat Triad 13-6 in a steady downpour. It was a game that was delayed over an hour, but turned out to be worth the wait. Then in 2001, JCHS invaded Troy and beat the Knights 20-14, handing Triad their first loss of the season. Last week the Knights held on to defeat the Mascoutah Indians 27-12, despite turning the ball over 3 times on fumbles. Triad broke a 6-6 tie with only 5:46 remaining in the first half when QB Troy Schardan's 15-yard touchdown run snapped the tie. Then, RB Adam Weeks 3 run with 0:47 left in the half increased the Knight lead to 20-6. Both teams traded fourth quarter scores to round out the scoring. Weeks got his second touchdown of the night when he scored on a 4 yard run with 11:24 remaining in the game to put Triad up 27-6. The Knight Senior back had a big game rushing for 146 yards on 21 carries. Triad's other back Troy Schardan gained 96 yards on 16 attempts. QB Schardan was 4 of 6 for 53 yards with his favorite target being Jeff Gustafson who caught all four. Schardan has had good numbers taking the snaps for Triad this year he has completed 27 of 58 passes for 595 yards and 9 touchdowns. Gustafson is his usual go to guy catching 15 passes for 362 yards. On the ground Weeks has been one of the best backs in the conference rushing for 641 yards on 95 attempts. On defense John Schlotter has 51 tackles while Brandon Herrington has 42. The Panthers, who defeated Waterloo 28-14, got a Trevor Crane 5 yard touchdown run with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter to take an early 7-0 lead. After the Bulldogs took advantage of a Panther turnover and knotted the score, Jersey struck with only seconds left in the first half when QB Andy Updike found Matt Grundmann for a 50 yard TD strike and a 14-7 halftime lead. Jersey struck again in the third quarter on the ground and from familiar faces, as Grundmann scored on a 44 yard run and Crane scored his second touchdown of the night from 12 yards out. RB StrutherGriffith led all Panther backs with 71 yards on 15 carries. The Panthers also had big nights defensively from Shayne Hill, Trevor Crane, Travis Cory and Adam Hayes. This will be another good test for Jersey as they have put themselves in a "do or die" situation. To make the play-offs they must win out the remainder of the season, since they are now officially erased from any conference championship hopes. It will take a perfect 48 minutes of football from the Panthers if they are to defeat the Knights on Friday. No turnovers, no giving up that "big play" and much more disciplined. If they are successful in doing this then they can compete with what I consider the best team in the Valley, if not Triad will end our season in a big way. By Mike McInerney
