Week #2 vs. Clinton (1-1)
9/1/06

No Comeback this week for Maroons

by Matt Eshelman

Unable to complete another second half comeback, Clinton fell to Central A&M 28-12 in their home opener.

The Maroons trailed by 20 at the break, but halftime adjustments helped out Clinton in the third. Going into the fourth, Clinton trailed by only eight, but that was the closest that they would get.

Central A&M fumbled away the opening kickoff to give the Maroons possession and solid field position. However, Clinton couldn’t do anything with it, fumbling their first snap. Junior Ben Houser recovered the ball for the Raiders who regained possession.

Later that possession, Courtney Mitchell broke through the Maroon line and didn’t stop until crossing the goal line for a 37 yard touchdown run. Ben Stringer added the PAT to put Central A&M up early.

Mitchell struck again in the second, this time with a one yard touchdown burst for six. The Maroons were unable to stop the Raider run game in the first half, giving up two touchdowns.

Then late in the quarter, Raider quarterback, Anthony Tintori hit tight end Ben Stinger for a 9 yard touchdown. The kick was blocked, but Central A&M had all of the momentum, going into the break up 20-0.

Clinton was ready to go in the third quarter, however.

John Smith beat defenders to the outside as he ran to daylight for a 26 yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing Raider possession, the Maroons forced a punt which was blocked. The Maroons had solid field position and they used to their advantage.

Facing a fourth and goal from the 6, Chris Hammer called a gutsy pass. It worked. Dusten Hubble hit John Smith just passed the goal line to elevate the Maroons’ score. The special teams woes continued when normally sure handed Smith was unable to come up with the pass from Hubble on the two-point conversion.

Clinton trailed 20-12 going into the final stanza.

The Raiders forced a Maroon put and were determined to put the game out of reach. Tintori threw his second touchdown pass of the night when he hit Tanner Sloan who raced past Maroon defenders en route to a 43 yard touchdown. Tintori then hit first half monster Courtney Mitchell with a pass for the two point conversion.

Central A&M achieved their goal.

Clinton could not produce any offense the rest of the game. After the Maroons failed to convert a fourth and long, Tintori proceeded to kneel on the ball, completing the victory for the Raiders.

The loss is tough for the Maroons who looked like they had a comeback threat in store. John Smith was still able to muster up 126 yards rushing on 20 carries. He also had two catches for 18 yards.

Courtney Mitchell led the A&M offense with 103 yards on just nine carries. Anthony Tintori only completed three passes, but he made them count finishing with 39 yards passing, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. This win is big for the Raiders who will host Monticello in Week Three action.

Meanwhile, Clinton must recover next week as they travel to Warrensburg to face the Cardinals in a game that they need for playoff hopes.
