5A State Finals vs. Springfield (S.H.G.) (14-0)
11/26/2005

Andrew Doyle score on a 6 yard run to help bring the Pioneers with in 6 points, by making the score 20-14 in favor of the Cyclones. Doyle also passed for 98 yards & 2 touchdowns.

Brenneisen's Record Helps Cyclones Win 1st Title

Champaign (Memorial Stadium) - Alleman's defensive front line came into the state finals' weekend with the biggest average size out of all 8 classes, but they were unable to get to Scared Heart-Griffin's QB Bobby Brenneisen enough to disrupt the Cyclones high powered passing game.

At an average of 6'2 247 lbs, Sean McKinght, David Brickner, Kameron Rummans, Patrick Dalton & Greg Wiebel who make up Alleman's front 5, always one step to late as Brenneisen passed for a 5A Title game record 351 yards.

Brenneisen, who broke the 5A title game passing records for yardage (351), attempts (40) & completions (29) was sacked just twice and intercepted only once, as he found Alex Reavy 12 time for 149 yards & 1 TD and Jeff Sanders 10 times for 134 yards & a TD.

Alleman had it's offensive stars of the game as well. Andrew Doyle & Matt Frutiger both racked up over 100 yards rushing and Doyle threw for 98 yards and 2 TDs, adding to the 1 TD he had on the ground. The Pioneers, actually put up more offensive yards than the Cyclone, 404 to 370.

The Cyclones scored first on as Sanders hauled in a 15 yard pass from Brenneisen with 4:15 left in the opening quarter to put them up 7-0.

Alleman would answer right back though, as the Pioneers scored in 4 plays, thanks to a 47 yard completion to Kevin Tracey, tying the game at 7 a piece.

The Cyclone would score 13 unanswered points behind a Reavy 60 yard reception midway through the 2nd quarter and then 2 Mike Edwards field goals of 33 & 37 yards.

The 37 yard field came after Bobby Rakers forced Doyle to fumble and then recovered the ball to set SHG up on the Alleman 22 yard line.

The Pioneer defense, gave up just 2 yards on that possession before Edwards made his second field goal of the game.

Alleman, started to catch up after going a 5 play drive stalled and forced the Pioneers to punt, Tracey intercepted for the Pioneer's 2nd pick of the game, giving Alleman the ball on the SHG 45 yard line.

Eight plays later Doyle would get into the endzone of the ground with a 6 yard run, bring the game with in reach, 20-14.

This was SHG's 5th finals game since 1975, where they had finished 0-4 before Saturday's 28-21 victory over Alleman Catholic.

Brenneisen & the Cyclones would put together a 13 play 73 yard drive that ended with a 6 yard run by Andre Pendergrass, to help make it a two score game 28-14 with 29 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

The Cyclone stopped Alleman on their next possession, after the Pioneers had made it 48 yards to the SHG 42 yard line.

Hoping to end the possibility of any Alleman comeback, the Cyclones ran down the clock over 10 plays. With a 1st & goal at the 8, things were looking to be all but over for the Pioneers, that is until a penalty and a Michael Alter sack on Brenneisen, put SHG in a 4th & goal from the 18. Edwards would come out for his 3rd field goal attempt of the game, but it would fall short in the face of a 15 mile an hour wind.

With only 2 minutes left in the game, the Pioneers went to work and scored on a 7 play 80 yard drive that end a 1 minute & 35 seconds later on a 6 yard pass to Tracey. Bring Alleman within 7 points of the lead, down 28-21.

The tension was high as the Pioneers lined up for the onside kick and as the ball bounced a pile ensued and the refs took a minute to dig through and discuss who had come away with the ball.

With the signal towards the Cyclones the sidelines went nuts and the offense came back out for one last time in 2005 to snap the ball cleanly and Brenneisen took a knee giving Scared Heart-Griffin their first ever football title in their long storied tradition.
