Week #2 Waukegan (0-1)
9/2/2005

Lane Blanks Bulldogs

Chicago (Lane Stadium) - In the first ever opening home night game in Lane Stadium, Lane showed they still have some offensive firepower. After graduating all but two of their offensive starters from last year's Public League championship team, many thought their offense would suffer this year. Tonight, proved that case wrong.

The two returnees, Ed Cortez (6'6", 355 lb) Offensive Lineman and Xavier Torres (6'0" 180lb) Wide Receiver did their part in the 40-0 Lane Tech win over Waukegan. Ed Cortez helped open massive holes all night for Lane running backs William Moorehead and Brandon Carter. Xavier Torres, a solid Division I prospect, contributed in the win by scoring a 4 yard touchdown run and dazzled the large home crowd with several spectacular runs after catches.

In addition to Torres and Cortez, some of Lane's underclassmen shined. Pint sized (5'8", 165lb), but extremely fast, running back William Moorehead delivered a strong overall performance by rushing for over 100 yards, catching a 25 yard screen pass reception on 4th and 20, and returning a punt for 25 yards. It seemed like Waukegan was chasing him all over the field all day. Junior WR Fuad Salami also contributed by scoring a touchdown on a blocked punt.

Lane's defense was also impressive. They caused two fumbles and an interception. But most importantly, the defense completely shut down Waukegan Running Back Patrick Dunn and Waukegan Quarterback Anthony Ochoa.

Overall, Lane's performance can be defined as a success. They showed that this year's team has a chance to be as successful as last years Public League championship team. Lane gave perennial state power Lockport a tough game last week, and handily beat Waukegan in this game. Next week, they can prove they are for real by beating Public League power Simeon. As for Waukegan, they will be lucky to match their 2-7 record they posted last year.
