Bio: Michalik was a stand-out linebacker for the St. Ambrose football team in the late ‘40s and early ‘50’s. Interesting Note: Michalik can be linked to the advent of using the face mask in the NFL. After giving a vicious late hit elbow to the face of Hall of Famer QB Otto Graham, on Nov. 15, 1953, at old Cleveland Stadium. Graham then made history by being the first player to wear a face mask. Graham returned to the game with 15 stitches and plastic wrapped around his helmet to protect his mouth.
Pro Career: Drafted in 1951 by the San Francisco 49ers in the 17th round (198 overall). He was moved to guard and made his NFL debut in the 1953 season. He was voted Second Team All-NFL in 1953, starring on the same team as Y.A. Tittle. He played with the 49ers in 1954 before going on to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955 and 1956.
