Welcome to Playoff Central. IHSFW.com gives you an in depth look at how the playoffs may take shape, by putting you right in the middle of our information control room. We break down who we think is the best bet to win it all and who's the most likely challengers. We also give you a list of the dark horse teams, or sleepers, Those teams that are overlooked throughout the year, but may sneak up o you in the playoffs or those pesky 6-3 & 5-4 teams that don't know when to quit. You can also get the latest info on what games you should miss each weekend "The Big Game" & who the best teams in the state are regardless of class "The Big 30".

Brackets & Scores
1A / 2A / 3A / 4A / 5A / 6A / 7A / 8A

2005 Title Game Date & Time; Nov. 25th 4 pm

Last Years Champ; Addison (Driscoll)(12-2) Runner-up; Manlius (Bureau Valley)(13-1)

Favorites to win the title;Spring Valley (Hall) (9-0),Carmi (C.-White County)(9-0),Manlius (Bureau Valley)(9-0), , DuQuoin (9-0) &Tolono (Unity)(9-0)
Other Title Threats;St. Joseph (S.J.-Ogden)(8-1),Carterville(8-1) &Wilmington(8-1)
The Dark Horses;Plano(8-1)

Favorites to win the title;
Spring Valley (Hall) (9-0) - The Devils may have had a little less competition than they're use to in the NCIC (Southwest), but they're still 9-0 & they did it against more than one playoff bound team. The Devils, like the rest of the 3A teams could face the toughest road to Champaign once they make it out of the 1st round, with more than their share of good teams, 3A should be the most highly contested championship.

Manlius (Bureau Valley)(9-0) - Last years runner-ups are right back in the title hunt.

DuQuoin (9-0) - The Indians have been lead by head coach Al Martin since 1988. He's compiled a 185-34 record over that time, along with 2 titles in 5 final games. DuQuoin will have it's hands full making it back as there are 3 other undefeated teams in the top half if the bracket. The Indians will look to get some big yardage from running backs Seth Milam (5'10 160 sr.), Nolen McIntire (5'10 180 sr.) & Ridge Thompson (5'10 160 jr.) as well as some big hits from Dusty Jaroski (LB 6' 190 sr.) & Milam at DB. With a some big wins contributing to their 9-0 record (28-21 over 4A Harrisburg 8-1), the Indians are poised to make another run for Champaign.

Tolono (Unity)(9-0) - The Rockets are undefeated again as they go undefeated. With hard fought wins over St. Joseph-Ogden, Mater Dei & Quincy (Notre Dame), this Unity team has been well tested for playoff battle.

Carmi (C.-White County)(9-0) - The Bulldogs slid in as one of our favorites to win the title. With 5 regular season opponents making the playoffs & an offense that is averaging 44 points a game using the classic single wing formation. Don't think that since we used the word "classic" that we're talking about a strictly running game. Senior quarterback Chase Kittinger (6'2 180) set a school record in week 8 when he threw 5 TDs in one game againstElkville (Elverado). With the exceptions of the Dogs first 2 games versus Johnston City (7-2) &Carterville(8-1), they have been rushing for at least 200 plus yards a game. The Bulldogs are the only team in the favorite list for 3A that hasn't been in a finals game with in the last 3 years (Carmi has never made a finals game to date).

Other Title Threats;
St. Joseph (S.J.-Ogden)(8-1) - The Spartans are every bit as good as some of the 9-0 teams in 3A, Losing their only game to Tolono (Unity) by 2 points. The Spartans have faced six playoff teams so far and will be ready to make a strong run at the title. With a less hectic path than some other teams, the length that the Spartans go in the playoffs will be determined by which one of the front runners make it to the quarter or semis with out being upset. Look for a possible rematch with Unity.

Carterville(8-1) - Carterville has been tearing it up on offense & shutting teams down on defense. They've averaged a 3A best 44 points a game on offense and with the only allowing 11 points a defense, they've also out scored opponents by 33 points a game. With their lone loss to Carmi-White County by a point in week #2, the Lions haven't faltered since and have bested 4 other playoff teams. Running back Tyler Harrell is one of the offensive weapons the Lions have and will need to use to a full extent if they plan on winning games with their rushing attack.

Wilmington(8-1) - They say defense wins championships. Well the Wildcats have one of the best defenses in the state, let alone 3A. The Cats have given up just 7 points a game and have shut out 4 teams this year. Their lone loss came from dark horse Plano by way of a 27-24 overtime loss. The Cats will have their hands full as they could face Plano again in round 2, Hall in the quarter finals then Tolono (Unity) or St. Joes-Ogden in the Semi-finals.

The Dark Horses;
Plano(8-1) - The Reapers came out of nowhere to claim at least a piece of the Interstate Eight Conference title. After going 3-6 last year and losing their only game this season by 1 point to Coal City in week #1, head coach Jim Green should get coach of the year honors if the Reapers go far in the playoffs. Running back Nick Nasti can put up some big numbers on the ground as the offense has been averaging 36 points a game. If the reaper can beat Wilmington twice in the same season (their first game they won 27-24 in OT) they still have to get through a possible who's who of past state title teams.
