Week #9 vs. Sullivan (1-8)
10/20/06

Maroons comeback together, Win on Senior Night

by Matt Eshelman

For the third week in a row, the Clinton Maroons weren’t playing for a playoff birth.

On Senior Night, they played for something else.

After trailing by 16 points at halftime, the Maroons fought resiliently to a 41-29 victory over Sullivan. John Smith rushed for 193 of the Maroons 372 yards on the ground. It was Smith who scored four touchdowns, but it was the team who came back.

Sullivan drove down the field on the opening drive of the game. Clint Schlosser ended the drive with a 5 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jacob Peterson’s extra point kick was good to put the Redskins up 7-0.

Clinton’s first possession stalled. The snap for the punt was high, forcing Andrew Smith to knock it out of the endzone for a safety. Sullivan held their 9-0 lead into the second quarter when they added onto it.

Moving the ball successfully again, Jacob Peterson ran the ball into the endzone from 4 yards out. The kicked was block, but it was now a 15 point lead.

The Maroons refused to give up as they moved the ball down the field. John Smith was handed the ball and he did his job, getting through the blocks and into the endzone for an 8 yard run. The kick was good and the Maroons finally showed some life.

That life was put in danger when Michael Vandeurson returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yard to the house to steal the momentum right back. Vandeurson then caught the two point conversion pass from Peterson to put Sullivan up 23-7 heading into the half.

At halftime, Coach Chris Hammer and the Maroons knew this wasn’t the way they wanted their Senior Night to go. So, they did something about it.

A nice opening drive of the second half led to another John Smith 8 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Ross Bruenger hit Smith in the endzone for the two-point conversion to cut the deficit.

After forcing a punt, Bruenger handed the ball to fullback Ian DeJaynes who hit the whole and didn’t stop until he hit paydirt for a 37 yard touchdown run. Bruenger hit receiver Jorden Hamblen past the plane of the endzone for the two point conversion to bring the Maroons all the way back to tie it up.

Sullivan’s drive stalled again. The Maroons then faced a 3rd down and 1 at the Sullivan 38 yard line. On what was a planned quarterback sneak, Ross Bruenger sneaked through the big gap the line gave him and he kept going. Bruenger scampered past the rest of the defense for another Maroon touchdown.

The kick was no good, but the Maroons had stolen all of the momentum and they weren’t done yet. On Sullivan’s next possession, John Smith picked off a pass and thanks to nice blocking he ran, broke some tackles, made some moves, and ran the pick into the endzone with 8 seconds left on the clock in the third quarter.

The pass failed on the two point conversion, but Clinton gave the game a 180 degree turn by scoring 28 points the third quarter.

Into the fourth, Sullivan was unwilling to give up. Chance Typer scored on a 7 yard touchdown run to minimize the deficit. The kick was blocked to leave the deficit at six points. Later into the quarter, John Smith put the game on ice with a 4 yard touchdown run, his fourth touchdown of the night.

Just 3 minutes and 27 seconds later, the game was history.

Although this win gives Clinton just a 3-6 record, it proves that they fought together as a team. The Maroons had been a second half team all season. Their opening game win over Meridian was a second half-comeback. The Maroons also almost came back on Central A&M and Warrensburg-Latham.

The senior leaders from this team are now gone, but their names and faces will stay etched in Clinton football history forever.
