Week #5 vs.Carmi
(C.-White County)5-0
And Then There Was One
Both the Mules of Fairfield and the Bulldogs of Carmi were undefeated until the “shootout” at the “Mule Barn” took place Friday night. When the “firing” ceased, Carmi-White County came away with a 48-18 decision. The Mules struck first and quickly. On the opening kickoff, Jeremy Puckett escaped the Bulldog defense and sprinted 67 yards to the Carmi-White County 17 yard line where he later scored on a 3-yard run giving Fairfield their only lead. Carmi-White County then unleashed its “fire-power” and “blasted” the Mules with five first-half touchdowns to grab the lead for good. Justin Kosikowski had TD runs of eleven, four and seven yards, while Carl Torrey, the diminutive, 5 foot 4 “scat back”, ran for touchdowns of eleven and nine yards. Fairfield scored again with 6:34 remaining in the second period when the Mules fooled the Bulldog secondary by using the infamous play known as the “flea-flicker”. QB Lucas Reever tossed a lateral pass to Todd West, who fired an aerial to Puckett covering 69 yards. The Mules scored once more on a 3-yard run by Holden Smith with 25 seconds remaining in the third period. Carmi-White County posted two-second half touchdowns on a 25-yard pass from Chase Kittinger to Brad Sneed and a 92-yard sprint by Torrey. Carmi-White County, known for its deadly accurate passing attack, may have surprised Fairfield when their ground game netted 386 yards and six TDs. Since the long history and rivalry of these two schools has been documented, since 1899, the Rotary Clubs of each city decided to provide a traveling trophy dubbed the “Rotary Wheel”, to the winning team. Most valuable players were named for each team. Jeremy Puckett who snagged six passes for 122 yards and one TD and ran for 62 yards and one TD earned MVP honors for Fairfield. Carl Torrey, a “Buddy Young” type scat-back who ran for 254 yard on 12 carries and TD runs of 11, 9, and 92 yards was the MVP choice for the Bulldogs. By John Evers Stats from Week #5
