Defensive Pressure Stops Gavin's Pass Attack

Pat McShane(left) was a bad moon rising for Marian's Mike Gavin, while J.R. Zwierzynski streaked to 3 rushing TDs.

Joliet (Memorial Stadium) - At game time it was just over 50 degrees, in a game that felt like it should be being played in November dunning the finals, as the Spartans of Chicago Heights (Marian Catholic) (3-1)came to Joliet to take on the Hilltoppers of Joliet Catholic (4-0) in a game that may decide the conference champ for the Catholic Metro White.

In four games so far this year Joliet Catholic has faced the number one ranked team in the 5A polls twice. First it was Chicago (Mt. Carmel) then it was Marian Catholic. They've managed to take down both condensers in a sound fashion as they remained undefeated and sitting on top of most 4A polls.

Things started off on the rough side for Marian Catholic as starting QB Mike Gavin was sacked from the blind side by Pat McShane on a 2nd down pass attempt. On third down he was sacked by Sean O'Connor, which lead to a fourth down punt attempt that was blocked.

Joliet capitalized on this and scored a minute later from 2 yards out on a J.R. Zwierzynski run with 50 seconds left in the first. JC also came up with some big plays in the second. On a fourth and one Craig Tomansino dropped back and connected with Jason Lynch for a crucial first down, on a drive that would end with another Zwierzynski touchdown run from 3 yards out. Lynch top off the 2nd quarter with a QB sneak as he followed the offensive line from about 5 inches out to help give JC a 19-0 half-time lead.

The moon started rise over the east stands and so did Marian's offense as they started a drive behind the running of Deon Bradley. Gavin capped of the drive not with a pass but an 8 yard Qb keeper, to put the Spartans on the board in the third.

JC answered back to start the fourth quarter off on another TD run by Zwierzynski from 3 yards out, but watched as Bristram Dawkins had an electrifying kick off return for a touch down. JC's defense put the kibosh on any attempt for a late game come back as Gavin was sacked twice on their next possession to force a punt, which would lead to another JC score and a lock on the game.

Marian put in junior QB Don Busse who after a couple of successful plays would connect with WR Carl Laurie for a TD with 30 seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 34-18.
