Week #1 vs. Joliet (Catholic) (0-1)
Not How It was PlannedWhat transpired with just under a two minutes left in the game will forever live in legend for Caravan fans & in infamy for the Hilltopper faithful. With Joliet Catholic securing a 20-14 lead with 5:26 left in the game and stopping Mt. Carmel on the next drive, the football stars seemed to be aligned for the Hilltoppers who would just need to hold on to the lead. Mt. Carmel would get the ball after stopping Joliet with a minute and fifty left. The Caravan would then attempt a half back option pass, but QB Jordan Lynch’s lateral would fall short of Tim Brown. The Hilltopper's defense surged towards the ball, but an almost perfect bounce into Brown’s hands would set up K.C. Picard with a blocker and almost no one around him. Brown would throw the ball from the 10 yard line hitting the wide open Picard around the 30 yard line. The Hilltopper fans went from ruckus to silent as Picard sprinted down the sidelines untouched for an 80 yard touchdown reception. Dashing the Hilltoppers hopes for an upset. “I would like to say it was planned that way, but I’m not really that smart” Lenti said in a post game interview. A lot of people had already given them the W because they have a lot of experience coming back, a lot of starters coming back and because they’re ranked higher." IHSFW.com had Mt. Carmel ranked #2 and Joliet Catholic at #12. After an emotional post game talk with his team, Joliet Catholic head coach Dan Sharp talked about the game and the play. “I really think we’ve got a heck of a football team. We controlled the whole second half, but Frank Lenti’s boys play the same time of football we believe our kids play. That it’s never over.” "They took a play that was chicken you know what and made chicken salad out of it.” Sharp said referring to the botched half back pass for a TD. Looking forward though Sharp added. "We just got out of position on that play. And those are things we can fix. I’m glad it’s happened to us in a game like this, rather than a playoff game." Joliet Catholic's John Ruettiger went 5 of 14 for 92 yards with an interception. Tyler Hudetz had 2 TDs while Connor Krisch lead the team in rushing with 71 yards an a TD. For the Caravan, Byron Stanford lead the team in rushing with 63 yards and a TD, while Jordan Lynch was the QB through out the game for Mt. Carmel his 68 yard performance & one touchdown was over shadowed by Tim Brown's one for one 80 yards passing, and the game winning TD. Brown also rushed for 39 yards. Justin Bracken had the Caravan's only other touchdown, on a 10 yard pass. by Vincent Johnson
