Week #1 vs.Chicago (Morgan Park) (1-0)
8/27/2004

Joe Plano (28) & Pat Ryan (47) celebrate in the end zone after getting a saftey on a Morgan Park reverse play.

Speedy Defense Keys Mustangs Victory

Chicago (Gately Stadium) - While it wasn't quite as unthinkable as it may have been a few years back, but Morgan Park became the first Chicago Public League team to beat the Caravan sinceChicago (Simeon)in week 2 of 1991.

A smaller than normal Caravan crowd may have been a warning that things are different than they were in the hay days of the 1990's for the Caravan, but the coaches have been optimistic about the large number of returning players that make up this squad. Still Mt. Carmel's offense looked a bit slow compared to Morgan Park's speedy defense, unable to make any big offensive plays.

While the Caravan gain slightly more yards than Morgan Park, 175 yards of offense versus 163, neither team was able to gain big yards consistently, with each team averaging about 3.5 yards a play. Morgan Park did manage to get the big yards when they needed them the most & Pierre Jones (RB 6' 210 Sr.) put up the biggest numbers of the night, but failed to pass the century mark with 97 yards on 24 carries plus a TD.

Jones' TD was on a 32 yard run midway through the 2nd quarter to put the Mustangs on the board first.

Mt. Carmel's answer would came on their second possession after halftime, where they successfully drove down the field by pushing the ball up the middle. Larry Dortch would dart almost untouched up the middle from the 13 yards to tie things up with 6:41 in the third, as the Caravan started to look back to normal.

A safety on Morgan Park on a reverse play on their own 6 would put Mt. Carmel on top and gave them possession.

Once again though the Mustang's quickness would haunt the Caravan offense, forcing them to punt shortly after. Which led to a Pagel Williams (CB 5'9 173 Sr.) blocked a punt .

Morgan Park regained the lead and would hold on to win after on 4th & 23 the Caravan were called for pass interference. Setting up a Demetrius Jones (QB 6'3 180 Jr.) TD on a 6 yard run.

Melvine Rice (CB 5'7 165 Sr.) would help seal the Mustangs victory as he picked off a Dan Daigler pass around the Morgan Park 40 yard line with 2:20 left to play.

Nick Hofbauer (RB 5'10 206 Sr.) lead Mt. Carmel with 68 yards rushing.
