A Mt. Carmel defender goes on a collison course with J.R. Zwierzynsk.

Joliet (Memorial Stadium) - The word overrated surfaced early in reference to Chicago (Mt. Carmel), on Friday night at Joliet Memorial Stadium. As the Hilltoppers of Joliet Catholic took a 22-0 lead by the middle of the 2nd quarter of this state champion match up.

Joliet's first possession resulted in a 46 yard J.R. Zwierzynski touch down run, but Mt. Carmel blocked the extra point making the score 6-0. JC intercepted a pass from John Mulcrone on the next possession but had to settle for a field goal. Making the score at the end of the first 9-0.

Staring the second quarter JC scored two more times, both on junior tight end Mike Kolodziej TD receptions. Joliet was now leading 22-0. The Mt. Carmel stands had been silent for most of the 2nd quarter and one might start to wonder, was Mt. Carmel overrated or was Joliet Catholic really that good?

That question would not be pondered long as Mt. Carmel put up 20 unanswered answered points. The first came in the 2nd quarter on a Mulchrone TD pass to Shannon Lightfoot and on two Don Dorham TD runs of 3 and 43 yards in the 3rd. This helped to bring the score to 22-20 and bring the crowds to life.

After battling for the remainder of the third and most of the fourth Mike Kolodziej jumped over a defender and dragged another into the endzone. With the extra point conversion being made the Hilltoppers had enough insurance to rest sound once their defense stopped Mt. Carmel.

Joliet Catholic's head coach Dan Sharp attributed part of the win to tight end (and alternate QB) Jason Lynch who made some key blocks enabling junior QB Graig Tomasino to have more time to make a completion.
