Week #5 vs. Jerseyville (Jersey) (3-2)
9/22/2006

Mascoutah Runs Through Panthers

The visiting Jersey Panthers had to deal with two types of lightning on Friday night: the lightning created by mother nature went away, however the lightning created by Mascoutah's Chris Montgomery did not. Montgomery the junior RB rushed for a total of 182 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading the Indians to a convincing 33-6 rout of Jersey.

Jersey opened the game with a drive that failed to get off the ground, while the Indians wasted no time in getting on the board first. It was a drive that started from the Indian 10 yard line, and was capped by a 49-yard touchdown run by Montgomery with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter.

The second Mascoutah score was set up by a Panther fumble on a kick-off. The Indians benefited from the good field position and got a 9 yard score from Senior QB Christian Hollis. The 6'2", 205lb senior rushed for 42 yards on four carries.

The Panthers bounced back in the second quarter however, after lightning caused a delay for nearly an hour. It was then that QB Andy Updike found Freddie Pohlman from 5 yards out, to close the gap to 14-6. This was as close as the Panthers could get though as Richard Bailey scored four minutes later on 5 yard run, increasing the Mascoutah lead to 21-6 at halftime.

In total, the MVC leading Indians rushed for a total of 380 yards compared to only 127 yards for Jersey, while Montgomery had more yards than the Panthers in total offense.

"Mascoutah is a very good football team, they beat us in every part of the
game," said Jersey coach Chris Skinner. The Indians improved to 2-0 within the conference and 5-0 over-all.

The Indians added two more touchdowns in the second half, one in each quarter. The first coming on another big run from Chris Montgomery, this one from 52 yards out and the final score was on Brock Pflasterer's 2-yard run. Both PAT's were no good, bringing the score to 33-6.

On a night when there did not seem to be too much to make the loyal Panther fans very happy, there were some moments to take note of. One of those moments was an exciting JCHS play on offense, was that of a 25 yard pass play from Updike to junior James McAdams, who made a nice grab to haul it in. There were also some nice defensive efforts from Kevin Wittman, Trevor Crane and Adam Hayes.

Jersey must now regroup for week 6 as they travel to Waterloo to play the Bulldogs. The Panthers will try to make it three in a row over their MVC rival.

"We must improve this week if we are going to play with Waterloo, they are very well coached and go from whistle to whistle." said Skinner.
