Week #2 vs. Granite City (1-1)
8/24/07

Jersey panthers football
Jersey in action against Granite City.

Warriors wrap up Panthers

It only took seconds for the Granite City Warriors to change the momentum from an impressive opening kick-off return to a fumble recovery resulting into a touchdown. The young Panther football squad found itself on the wrong side of a 7-0 score before having an opportunity to test out the new offense. The Warriors Kris Benham was in the right place at the right time as he recovered the fumble lost by J.R.Henderson. Granite City then wasted no time by taking advantage of the Panther turnover, when RB Kenny Stanley scored from 3 yards out with 9:16 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Warrior QB Matt Kelly passed for 5 completions on 7 attempts for 67 yards. The Granite City senior also scored later in the first quarter on a 17 yard rumble that was followed by a successful PAT by Sophomore Jake DePew and a 14-0 Panther deficit.

The Panthers failed on their only scoring chance in the second quarter when Coach Carter elected to go for the touchdown on a fourth and goal from the 5-yard line. QB Luke Barthelmess took the snap from center and was stopped for no gain. The Panther scoring opportunity was set up when Stanley lost the ball on the Warriors own 11-yard line that was recovered by Kyle Church.

A Panther bright spot was QB Luke Barthelmess who was in the starting line-up for the first time and played well. The Jersey Sophomore completed 5 of 8 passes for 37 yards and no interceptions. Panther RB Will Clark led all ground gainers with 25 yards on nine carries. The Panthers also got a nice effort from Kevin Wittman on defense and a fumble recovery from Sam Cronin.

For the second straight game the Panther defense gave up a late first half touchdown that really made the difference. Kenny Stanley got the third Warrior score on a one yard plunge. The PAT was blocked however and the Warriors went into halftime comfortably ahead 20-0. Granite City then put the game on ice when Larry Smith raced in from 9 yards out increasing the lead to 27-0.

Jersey will get some much needed home cooking on Friday as they return home to host the Peoria Richwoods Knights. The Knights evened their record to 1-1 on Friday with a 28-21 victory over Galesburg after dropping the opener to Washington H.S. Richwoods will feature it's big Fullback Frankie Polnitz.
