Jersey panthers football

Despite mistakes Panthers show promise

August 24th, 2007 will go down in the JCHS record books as the beginning of "The Carter Era". For those in attendance on Friday night at Kraushaar-Rosenberger Stadium, it was a chance to see the first game that new head coach Gary Carter stood on the sidelines in his Columbia blue and white shirt with the decorative  panther head embroidered near the top. Although many fans sitting on the visitors side of the field saw a Panther loss filled with many self induced mistakes, a better look saw the very first stage of a pair of guided hands shaping some wet model clay.

Despite the 13 penalties thrown at the Panthers and an inability to stop the no-huddle spread offense of the Crimsons, the boys in blue were only 2 plays short of a victory. A costly personal foul penalty late in the first half led to a Jacksonville score when Crimson QB Blake Schnitker found Trevon Harris for an 11-yard TD and a 14-3 halftime lead. Later, Panther RB Brandyn Snider was denied a scoring run after the play was called back on a holding penalty. Erase both of those costly penalties and more than likely you have a different ending.

Brandyn Snider did connect earlier in the game when he kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter to cut the Jacksonville lead to 7-3. The Crimsons had scored the games first touchdown when Schnitker found and open Kevin Ray for a 30-yard TD.

Jacksonville put the game away in the final quarter when Schnitker again came up big on a 11-yard score, giving the home team a comfortable 21-3 lead. The Panthers were able to get on the board again late in the game when RB Mick Wilderman bulldozed his way into the end zone from 16 yards out.

The defensive star of the night for Jersey was Senior Will Clark who had 9 tackles and 2 assists while Andrew Wadlow had 7 tackles and 3 assists. Offensively, Clark had 56 yards on 15 carries. Panther starting QB Tony Sanderson was 1-4 for 48 yards and one interception. His only completion was to Nick Woelfel who caught the pass after it was tipped by Crimson defender Isaac Slater. Sanderson was replaced by Sophomore QB Luke Barthelmess in the first half, who had similar numbers of 1-4 and one interception. His only completion was to Sam Pohlman for 14 yards.

This Friday night the Panthers travel to Granite City to play the physical Warriors under the direction of fifth year head coach Matt Martin. The Warriors lost to the Marion Wildcats 35-19 last week.
