Week #5 vs.Coal City (4-1)
9/23/3005

Coalers Roll Sandwich

This match was won and lost on the ground.  The Indians of Sandwich run the ball, for the most part, in their offense.  In fact, between two quarterbacks, Sandwich only attempted six passes- completed zero.  On 43 of 49 offensive plays, the Indians ran the ball; or attempted to.  On those 43 running plays Sandwich ran for a combined 142 yards (3.3 yards per).

On the other hand, for a group who does little more than run the football, they were ill-equipped to stop the Coaler rushing attack.  The Coalers ran, ran and ran some more.  They ran so much that starting quarterback Jack Carpenter a single pass, an incompletion to Brian Naiden.

On the ground, Coal City dashed for 323 yards on 40 tries of their own (8.1 yards per).

The Coaler defense was jam-packed with stars stopping the Wing-T rushing unit of Sandwich.  The linemen, to little surprise, were dynamic in shutting down Sandwich.  Nick Trotter stopped 10 little Indians with a sack and Keegan Grant chipped in eight for the game.  Matt Rodriguez and Mike Kettmann added nine and five tackles respectively for the green and gold.

Coal City’s leading tackler was Nick Bonarek.  With 12 tackles, Bonarek made sure that few Indians would get past the second level of Coaler defense.  Only twice did Sandwich run for greater than eight yards.

Coming up from the secondary were the customary names, Naiden and Luke Turner.  Turner contributed six tackles while Naiden brought down 10 of his own, one for negative yards.  Other Coalers chucking down Indians were; Austin McDowell, Chris Walsh, Zach Smith, Bernie D’Orazio, Kevin Tuskey, Chris Kaluzny and Brian Goff.

The first Coaler touchdown did not come until 8:53 to go in the first half.  Turner ran the ball in from two yards away to give Coal City the 7-0 lead.  It took over eight minutes of game clock before the Coalers would move the digits on the board again.  A 4-yard jaunt from Smith did just that, putting the Coalers up 14.

The two players alternated touchdowns again in the third quarter, this time from much further out.  On their first possession of the second half Coal City wasted no time in running to daylight.  The Indians were futile in trying to stop Turner on a 55-yard stroll to the goal line.  While spelling Smith, Turner ran for 124 yards on only six rushing attempts (20.7 yards per).

Watching the rousing accomplishment of Turner in his absence, Smith would not be outdone.  He bettered his backfield cohort by seven yards on his last score of the game.  From 62-yards away Smith turned the match into a laugher.  The forth of his five extra points sailing through the uprights, Ben Rouse put the Coalers in front 28-0.

With the big lead apparently insurmountable by the slow chugging offense of the opposition the Coalers opted to give some of the stars of Coaler future a little more action.

Carpenter was replaced by sophomore Justin Blaine late in the third.  His first varsity field-time produced his first two completions (26 total yards) and interception, all good things to get out of the way.  Blaine joined a group of sophomores who have been contributing to the Coalers through five Fridays of play.  Timm Kroeger and Noah Roseland have been a big part of kickoffs, both covering and returning since the get-go.  Trotter has clearly been a cog in the middle of the defense, getting better by the week.

After a turnover on the quarterback-center exchange and a fake punt on forth down, the Indians ruined the potential shutout when Adam Imel went in for a score from seven yards away.  For the game, Imel ran 16 times for 37 yards.  Quarterback Glenn Fuller also ran for 37 yards, his on five attempts.

From two yards away, Marc Olsen scored the closing touchdown of the game one  minute into the forth quarter.

Other Coalers in the fold of Coal City’s running game were D’Orazio, Tuskey, Roseland and the fan favorite Grant who is recognized with a 7-yard run for his highlight fumble recovery and subsequent run.
