Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers football
Only oneplayer in this pile of Tigers will be back, do you know who it is? As South returns just 2 out of 11 starters. The answer is #33 Sam Burke.

Tigers Ready to come out of the Shadows
8/22/07

“It was a tremendous ride last year.” Is the way Tigers’ head coach Ron Muhitch phrased the 2006 football season. “I’m not sure we hung up the accolades…  until the 4th of July parade going down Main Street Wheaton”.

Don’t be fooled though, all that was set aside once summer workouts and two-a-days came around. “Our slogan this year is ‘It’s going to take a championship effort to defend’. But all I’m concerned about is the championship effort, I don’t care about the defending part until we have an opportunity to be there.” Muhitch said.

Having the opportunity will be a bit of a challenge for the defending class 8A State Champs, who Muhitch says is smaller team this year. Of course smaller to last year’s team might not be saying much, as there was an almost unheard of 14 players that moved on to play college ball according to Muhitch.

What is for sure is that the Tigers will be bringing back just 4 starters. Junior fullback Mike Olp, Will Matte (RT 6’3 260 sr.), Mark La Belle (DL) & Sam Burke (LB 6’ 220 sr.) . Matte will be joined by Nate Williams (RT 6’2 255 sr) as the two players Muhitch says are the team’s big men.

While Muhitch feels that, how the defensive line comes together may be the biggest open end on the team, he’s pretty confident in LaBelle, who will be a rush end & Dan Cetina who will be at nose tackle.

Mike Piatowski saw a little it a time at QB last year. Stepping up big time in the semifinal game against York, which Muhitch described as “the game that has given us fits over the last couple of years”.

Talking about the Tigers motto for 2007.

The rest of the backfield will be made up of a running back trio featuring Francis Adarkwa (RB 5’10 195 sr.), Tobias King (RB 5’7 173 sr.) & Peter Jarrett.

Muhitch thinks that there may be a few surprises in the backfield this season, much like spectators had in last years state finals, when Jim O’Brien came out from behind the shadow of Dan Dierking. “There are some kids we think will surprise some people.” Partially because they’re unknown.

Muhitch also thinks really highly of  the receiving core. Notably Chris Schweighardt (WR 5’11 165 sr.), Evan James (WR ) & Mike Sloboda (WR). And with matchups against playoff caliber teams like Hinsdale Central in week #1 & Naperville North in week #9, he knows they’ll be forced to pass.

Hinsdale Central runs a 3-5 defense and Naperville North’s 4-4 can be a real run stopper. Muhitch had this to say about the 3-5 defense of the Red Devils. “You don’t see that to often. They try to put pressure on you from different [positions] which makes you throw the ball a little more.”

With a tight schedule and a tough conference, the Tigers will be looking to get every point they can this season. Knowing that there may be a few close games, Muhitch says that one of the biggest factors could be the fact that they have a kicking game this year.
Pointing out kicker Dan Conroy as someone who could be deciding factor at South.

Looking ahead on the schedule Muhitch says that week #9 could be a major game if the Tigers are making another run. “We could be looking at the conference title right there.” When asked about the possibility of both teams being 8-0 come week nine he said, “Larry [McKeon, head coach at Naperville North] & I would both take that at this point.”
