Week #5 vs.Decatur (St. Teresa) (4-1)

Maroons Fall Short to Dunning, Bulldogs

Decatur (St. Teresa HS) –The Clinton Maroons had some confidence after last week’s shutout against Argenta. They would need that confidence and a lot more as they traveled to Decatur to face the tough St. Teresa Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs’ star tailback, Sean Dunning, decided to kick things off early in the game with a 1 yard touchdown burst with 7:50 to go in the first. The kick was blocked, but St. Teresa lead 6-0, early. Dunning attacked again later in the first with a long 52 yard sprint for six. Not to be outdone, Clinton’s newly assigned tailback, John Smith powered and raced his way to a long touchdown run after breaking several tackles.

Down 14-6 at backed up at his own 15 yard line,  Clinton’s Senior Quarterback, Keith England fired a rocket to Tyler Monkman. From there, Monkman sped past the Bulldog secondary to daylight for an 85 yard pass play. After the missed PAT, the Maroons held close, down 14-12.

However, the second quarter was all St. Teresa. Quarterback, Ryan Collins scored a 25 yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper thanks to good blocking by the Bulldog line. Later in the second, the Bulldogs put two more on the board when the Maroons botched a punt snap. The ball flew over Andrew Smith’s head. Smartly, he kicked the ball out of the end zone for a safety to avoid a catastrophic play.  The Bulldogs tacked on another touchdown on a 6 yard Stephen Duncan touchdown run. St. Teresa lead 30-12 at the intermission.

With their backs against the wall, the Maroons’ defense toughened up in the third, allowing no points. Their offense was able to put six more on the board on a 30 yard touchdown strike from Keith England to Tyler Monkman. The Bulldogs still led 30-18 as the third quarter came to a close.

In reality, this game belonged to Sean Dunning. He made that point even more evident in the fourth quarter when he busted through the line and didn’t stop until he hit pay dirt on a 53 yard touchdown run. After the Maroons failed to convert on fourth down, the Bulldogs drove down the field and put seven more on the board to make the final score, 44-18.

Turnovers and penalties really hurt the Maroons tonight. Keith England threw 2 interceptions and several 15 yard personal foul penalties stopped any momentum the Maroons were getting. John Smith and the Clinton offensive line had a fairly successful night, despite the outcome of the game. Smith ran for 148 yards on 20 carries and 1 touchdown. Tonight’s player of the game, Sean Dunning bruised, battered, and fired his way to over 330 yard and 3 touchdowns.

The Maroons will try to get a much needed win next week as they will hook up with the tough as nails Shelbyville Rams. Meanwhile, St. Teresa will face off against the Monticello Sages on the road.
