Mustangs Fast Out of the Gate

Champaign (Memorial Stadium) - Downer's head coach John Belskis said that coming into Friday nights game versus two time 7A runner-up Edwardsville, that he was most worried about the Tiger's speed, "That was the one thing we couldn't simulate in practice". Ironically the speed at which his offense scored was what impressed him the most in South's 28-6 victory.

South would charge into the endzone on each of their first two possessions. The first a 4 yard run by RB Erick Newman. After an Edwardsville fumble, recovered by South's Dustin Szczepaniak, South would score their second TD on a 16 yard pass from Bob Dreveny to Greg Wagner, putting them up 14-0 with just under 3 minutes to go in the first.

South held Edwardsville to under 30 yards in the first half. Belskis, contributed that to their first two drives keeping some two way players out on the field. "They had six kids out their playing both ways. I think that first drive really took the wind out of their sails".

Newman would finish the game with 2 TD's and over 100 yards rushing. Junior, Chance Strader, would score the lone Tigers' TD in the third, on a 15 yard run.
