#10 vs. Salem
Panthers Stomp Salem Play-off fever filled the air at Snyder's Sports Complex in Jerseyville, as the Panthers crushed the Wildcats of Salem 41-0. The Panthers took advantage of plenty of early Salem mistakes including a first quarter fumble that resulted in a 7 yard touchdown run by Brent Hawkins. The fumble recovery by Ryan Rawson seemed to set an early tone for the game. Jerseyville who had departed in last years first round to Peoria Richwood, were determined not to see history repeat itself. Nathan Smay rounded out the first quarter scoring by returning a Jason Kelly interception 28 yards. This increased the Panther lead to 14-0. Greg Madson was the big play hero in the second quarter, when he recovered another Salem fumble to set up Jerseyville's third score. QB Joey Kallal (9 of 17 for 164 yrds.) found Smay dashing towards the endzone for a 39 yard touchdown. The Panthers then put the game on ice, scoring on 2 more rushing TD's, within three minutes. Hawkins scored his second touchdown on a 5 yard burst into the endzone to make it 28-0. A short time later RB John Perdun got in on the fun with a 4 yard score of his own. The Jerseyville defensive line continued to control the Salem offense by getting big plays by lineman Brian Ford. Ford's aggressive effort was a key in the Panther shut out. He was credited with 3 QB sacks against Salem's Kelly. Ford's hard nosed performance was typical of this years Jerseyville defensive play. He later recovered a Salem fumble on a kick off that set up the Panthers final score. RB Chris Greeling scored on a 3 yard run to give Jerseyville a 41-0 half time lead. The second half saw the 40 point rule go into effect. This allows the clock to continuously run if any given team hold's at least a 40 point lead, & stops for Td's & time-outs only, regardless of how close the score gets afterwards. The comfortable margin gave the locals a good opportunity to send in plenty of player substitutions. Jerseyville could have scored again on their first possession of the second half. With the ball on the Wildcat 10 yard line, Kallal threw a first down pass that was intercepted at the goal line. The officials ruled that the Wildcat defender made the catch but fumbled the ball only to recover it. The Panther win means Jerseyville advances to the second round of the IHSA play-offs. They must now face an even bigger test in the River Grove (Holy Cross) Crusaders. The Panthers get a second play-off home game, due to their higher seed (#7). Both teams will enter the big game undefeated at 10-0. Mike McInerney
