Offense Mixes It Up, "D" Plays Tough
The Jerseyville Panthers opened up Mississippi Valley conference play Friday night on the road with an impressive 34-7 drubbing of host Waterloo.
The Panthers got things going early when they recovered a fumble deep in Waterloo territory on the Bulldogs first possesion. Jerseyville capitalized on the turnover when RB Nathan Smay rushed for his first TD of the night, and the visitor's were out to a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers made it 14-0 in the second qrt. when senior QB Joey Kallal tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Brett Hawkins. Then Jerseyville RB John Perdun scored on a 2-yard run that gave the Panthers a 21-0 halftime lead.
Smay scored again in the 3rd quarter on a 3-yard run, making the score to 27-0. The Panthers rounded out their scoring, when second string QB Brett Hawkins connected to Chris Greeling on a 30 strike increasing the margin to 34-0.
Much of the credit for the victory goes to the defense, who played a solid game throughout. The Panthers played it tough against the Waterloo run, and the Bulldogs were never able to even threaten. Waterloo was finally able to score against the Panther subs with just minutes left. The Panther's might have scored again when 3rd string sophomore QB Bobby Tonsor drove his troops inside the 5 yard line, but with almost 2 minutes to go, Jerseyville ran the clock out and settled with the 34-7 win.
A total team effort tonight for the Panthers, who have now won 21 straight regular season games. Special mention goes to Nathan Smay,Joey Kallal, Greg Madson, Chris Greeling, Mark Hayes, Josh Vanausdoll and the entire "D" of Jerseyville. A nice victory on the road. Where once again the travelling Panther fans came close to outnumbering the local fans on a nearly 2 hour trip.
