Panthers Open Up Floodgates, D Plays Outstanding

The newly ranked #9 Jerseyville Panther, in the 4A Associated Press poll, proved worthy of their recognition by crushing the Mascoutah Indians 52-0.

The Panthers scored early and often in the opening qrt. and led 21-0. The Panther scores came on TD runs by Nathan Smay (35yrds.) and fellow RB Ben Bishop (1yrd.). QB Joey Kallal, also connected with Brent Hawkins on a 66 yard TD pass.

The Panthers led 35-0 at the half thanks to another fine run by Jerseyville RB Nathan Smay (13yrds.), and another by RB Mark Hayes (1yrd.)

The Panthers continued their scoring ways in the second half thanks for the most part on their second string. Nathan Smay once again scored his third TD of the night on a 53yrd. romp. After a 23yrd. field goal by Greg Madson made it 45-0, Jerseyville closed out their scoring when RB Josh Vanousdoll scored the final Panther TD of the night on a 5yrd. run. Jerseyville could have scored more, but penalty's reversed 2 Panther scores including a Nathan Smay TD punt return.

As the Jerseyville offense was lighting up the scoreboard in Mascoutah, it was the defense that stole the show. They were big/fast and incredible. Stopping the Indians play after play. The Defense limited Mascoutah to a total of -6 yards.

Special mention has to go the the Jerseyville line of Luke Kallal, Kevin Hughes, Jacob Warford and Brian Ford. The Pantherswho have outscored their opponents 128-7 in the last 3 games, will return to Jerseyville to take on Highland next friday for what could be their the biggest game of the regular season. The Mississippi Valley conf. crown will be up for grabs.
