5A State Finals vs. Springfield (S.H.G.) (14-0)
Back-to-BackChampaign (Memorial Stadium) – In an uncharacteristic fashion the Cyclones put up their first 4 touchdowns on the ground as Sacred Heart-Griffin won back-to-back state titles with a 35-14 win over Marian Central Catholic. Head coach Ken Leonard credited both Jesus Christ and a group of senior who had gone undefeated since their freshman year. “It helps when you get an extra year of practice in” referring to the 9 playoff games his team had over the last two seasons equaling extra practice time for this year’s seniors. He also added that not one of his seniors had been offered a scholarship. The Cyclone who held a 28-7 lead at the end of the third quarter would get a little challenge as it looked as if Marian might start a comeback with Jon Budmayr finished a 68 yard 13 play drive with a 6 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Polizzi. Closing the score to 28-14. The Hurricanes would stop the Cyclones on the next possession, forcing them to go 3 and out, but Keenan Gilpin would pick off a Budmayr pass, setting up Sacred Heart-Griffin for game clinching drive. Eight plays and 81 yards later, Bobby Brenneisen would complete his first pass for a touchdown as the Cyclones score the final points of the game, making the score 35-14 with 3:39 left to play. Brenneisen, who set the 5A Title game record in 2005 with 351 yards passing, threw for 295 yards today, going 18 of 25 with 1 TD and no INTs. Brenneisen also rushed for a score as well. Josh Gossard, racked up 48 yards on the ground, but none more important than the 6 & 4 yard TD runs in the first quarter, putting them up 14-0. Budmayr was 24 for 41 passing for 186 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs. Budmayr also rushed for a TD. David Kavish was a key on defense for the Cyclones, as he had 2 INTs and 10 tackles. by Vincent D.
