Mustangs Shocker Long Time Coming

Chicago (Gately Stadium) - With Morgan Park up 20-8 and the clock was winding down on the south side Saturday night, the public address announcer let it be know that Morgan Park had never beaten Richards and Richards' last loss to a Chicago Public team was in the 80's.

While Morgan Park brought out one of the biggest crowds that many could remember for a regular season public game, you could tell that many were pessimistic about the Mustangs winning. Even with the Mustangs leading late in the game. Maybe because unlike Richards, Morgan Park had never been to a state final, let alone a semi final game. Or maybe, because there has always been a stigma about being an city team.

But fate and history can be two different things as the Mustang would hold on to emerge victorious. Thanks impart mostly to a stellar Mustang defense that gave up only 144 yards of offense to Richards.

One of the more unbelievable stats coming from Saturday night's victory was that Bulldogs standout running back Deon Foster, had a total of 16 yards rushing on 14 attempts.

On top of stopping the Bulldogs running game in the backfield, Morgan Park put enough pressure on 6'7" QB Sean Lewis, who's one of the top recruits in the state, to have him go 7 of 24 for 110 yards & 1 interception. Lewis and his line looked a little anxious towards the Mustangs rush and had quite a few fumbled snaps as well as Lewis being sacked numeous times.

One of those bad snaps came on a 1st & 1 on the goal, which w Morgan Park recovered This happened midway through the second when Morgan Park only had a 6-0 lead.

Richards would come back on a short drive later in the second to actually take a brief 8-6 lead on a Foster 3 yard TD run, with a 2 point conversion. Morgan Park would drive from on their next possession to score with just over a minute left on a 19 yard reception from Andre Moore to Pierre Simms. Simms would also rush for the 2 point conversion.

Simms would finish the day with 156 yards rushing on 33 carries and 1 TD as Morgan Park kept relentlessly pounding on both sides of the ball. Jordan Everley would give the Mustangs 2 receiving TDs, including the game wining TD to start off the 4th quarter, as he scored on a 26 yard reception from Andre Moore.

Moore's 2 TD passses would be his only completions on the night as he went 2 for 9.

Morgan Park's pound it style game plan did have a few short comings as their special teams average under 20 yards a punt.

Andrew Bryant & Phillip Brown would be the stand outs on D for the Mustangs as Brown had 3 sacks & Bryant had 1 sack & a fumble recovery.
