Week #1 vs.Chicago (Mt. Carmel)1-0
Talent Off The Field
Chicago (Solider Field) - Much has been made in the preseason about the Talent heavy Morgan Park Mustangs and that, along with an underdog status being placed on Mt. Carmel, may have been the two biggest factors in this upset.
It appears that the simplest plan to stopping Morgan Park's talented offense, is to keep them off the field. And that's just what Mt. Carmel head coach Frank Lenti did in the second half.
With just a few second left in the 3rd, the Caravan would get possession and put together a drive to end all drives.Starting deep in their own territory and up 12-6, Mt. Carmel would pound it out on the ground for over 7 minutes before scoring to take a 20-6 lead with 5:40 left in the game.
"We figured if we could just grind it out & wear them down a little bit we'd be in better shape." Lenti said as he commented about the second 4th quarter drive.
Admitting that they couldn't hope to contain Mustangs QB Demetrius Jones & WR Chris Jamet the added "The most import part of our game plan, was to have our offense hang onto the ball."
Mt. Carmel's Carter Kopach (QB 6' 195 jr.) would do all the main scoring for the Caravan, as he rattled off 3 touchdowns on the ground. The Biggest being the 9 yard run at the end of their 7 minute drive in the 4th.
Dominic Sulo (RB 5'11 182 sr.) would get the final Caravan TD of the day on a 23 yard run with 2:26 left to play. Morgan Park's lone TD came on a Jones pass in the 1st quarter.
