Loyola 8 & 0 In Prep Bowl
22 unanswered points scored from 2nd quarter forward

Chicago (Soldier Field) - An overcast day could not damplen spirits of the fans who came out to see a great high school fotball game as Prep Bowl LXX commenced from new Soldier Field in Chicago. As the "Football War on the Lakeshore" returned to the home it has shared for 69 of the past 70 seasons, there was nothing short of exciting plays made between this year's combatants, Simeon of the Public League and (Wilmette) Loyola of the Catholic League. Both teams are no stranger to each other, having battled in 1986 with Loyola being victorious 14-12.

This year, Simeon was the aggressor with 14 first quarter points. However, playing on inspiration from their deceased head coach John Hoerster, the Ramblers racked up 22 unanswered points from the second quarter forward to take this year's edition 22-14 over the Wolverines. The Ramblers (10-4) have now won 8 in a row, a new Prep Bowl record.

Liam Stanton led the charge in the air as he completed 8 of 16 passes for 131 yards and a score. He also rushed for 31 yards, including a 10-yard scoring scamper in a decisive nine-point third quarter burst. Tregg Duerson wasn't bad either, rushing for 91 yards on 28 carries. With Loyola's win, Duerson becomes the first son of a former Super Bowl champion to win a Prep Bowl title, following in the footsteps of former Chicago Bear DB Dave Duerson, who won his ring at Super Bowl XX. Matt Pufpaf was key in the receiving corps, snagging three passes for 64 yards, two of those converting third downs. Pat Thompson led the defensive corps with two interceptions, one on the final play of Simeon's last drive with under two minutes in the game.

Simeon (8-6) was led by Vashon Winton, who despite throwing five interceptions, racked up 245 yards - 2nd best in Prep Bowl history - on 14 of 32 passing. He also gained 42 yards on the ground. All-State receiver Bryant Creamer was great in his final prep football game, catching four passes for 79 yards, while teammate Sinque Turner hauled in three passes for 69 yards, including a 39-yard strike in the first quarter.

With the loss, Simeon coach Al Scott was denied the chance to surpass Terry Lewis o Harper as the winningest coach in Chicago Public League history; he and Lewis are tied at 263 wins each as Scott ends his 33rd year with the Wolverines a four-time Public League champion.
