Week #2 vs. Chicago (Lane Tech)(0-3)
9/9/06

Simeon Stuns Lane 42-22

Simeon scores 38 unanswered points; Lane Tech losses 5 in a row

(Lane Stadium- Chicago, IL) When Lane Tech running back William Moorehead (17 rushes 32 yards) scored on a 2 yard touchdown run to open the 2nd half and give Lane a 22-8 lead, Lane Tech fans thought the game was in the bag. After all, Lane’s defense was stellar the first half as Lane stopped Simeon cold for most of the first half. In Simeon’s first five possessions to open the game, Lane’s defense held Simeon to three 3 and outs followed by a punt, a blocked punt, and a fumble. Furthermore, Simeon did not have a single first down until 4:42 left in the first half. Meanwhile, Lane Tech racked up 22 first half points. However, after Lane went ahead 42-22 Lane’s defense crumbled and Simeon’s offense woke up to score 38 unanswered points to stun Lane Tech.

The first half of the game featured a career night for Lane wide receiver and defensive back Chris Anton. Chris Anton grabbed four passes from quarterback Steve Pienkos for two touchdown passes of 20 and 55 yards. Anton also had an interception the first half. However, Simeon shut down Anton and Lane Tech most of the second half with the aid of two Lane Tech turnovers.

Lane Tech could just not contain Simeon Quarterback Jack Ramsey. He found receiver Martez Wilson for three touchdown passes of 13, 12, and 6 yards. Wilson is rated by Edgytim.com and almost all publications as the consensus number one football prospect for the class of 2007 in the state of Illinois. Also, the Sporting news has Wilson (6’4”, 228lbs) as the #30 football prospect in the nation as a defensive end. What makes Wilson special is that he has the athleticism to play both defensive end and wide receiver and there are not too many players that can play both receiver and defensive end. As a junior, he racked up 99 tackles, 25 tackles for a loss, 18 sacks, seen forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions. Wilson is being recruited by several major Division I colleges Universities.

Lane Tech starts out the 2006 season 0-3 and now have very little margin for error to make the state playoffs. Furthermore, Lane has now lost five games in a row dating back to 2005. In that span Lane Tech has lost to Dunbar, Warren, Lockport, Evanston, and Simeon. Lane may have lost 5 games in a row during the coach Bob Karlov era of 1993-1997 when Lane went 22-19 but that is uncertain.

Quotes from the game

Lane Receiver David Anton- “I had a great game today; I tried to step up and make some plays on both sides of the ball. Wherever I can make a play I make a play….we started the season 0-3, right now we’re going to try to sweep conference and try to take city.”

Simeon defensive end wide receiver Martez Wilson- “We needed this game a lot. We lost our first two games…We want to go downstate, win the championship….I like both [offense and defense], it’s just they double teamed me a little bit on defense. On offense even though I got doubled team, I Just broke the coverage and made plays…I want to worry about [recruiting] until after the season.”

Simeon assistant coach Chris Mallette- “It was a good victory for us especially beating Lane at Lane. It may have been done only a couple times the last three or four years… I think Martez Wilson is approaching his new found fame and status in a very mature way; he’s looking at the academics as well as football.”
