(Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, IL) - Lane Tech came into this game thinking they had a chance to competitively against the football power Stevenson Patriots. However, when you give up 28 points in the first 7 minutes of the game it is very difficult to win. Well Stevenson did just that as the one man wrecking crew Daniel Dowd scored 4 touchdowns for Stevenson in the first 7 minutes of the game to put Stevenson in command very early in the game. Lane made it easy for Stevenson to score when quarterback Robert Pienkos got a pass intercepted on Lane's first possession on the Lane Tech 4 yard line. Two plays later Daniel Dowd scored his first touchdown on a 3 yard run. Lane Tech answered back quickly when kick returner Chris Anton returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to tie the score 7-7. However, Stevenson replied back with a big kickoff return of their own when David Daar returned the kickoff 50 yards to give Stevenson the ball on the Lane Tech 20. A few plays later Dowd scored again on a 3 yard plunge. Lane tried to get tricky by attempting a reverse on the kickoff but botched the handoff and Stevenson recovered on the Lane Tech 1 yard line. The very next play Dowd found the end zone again on a 1 yard run. Then after a 3 and out by Lane Tech, Dowd ran 25 yards for a touchdown with 4:59 remaining in the first half. That score put Stevenson up 28-7 and played backups for most of the rest of the game.
The Stevenson defense held Lane running back William Moorehead to 19 yards on 19 carries and quarterback Robert Pienkos to 29 yards passing in 14 attempts. Lane's offense only got past the Stevenson 50 yard line twice in the entire game. Lane's scores came on special teams and defense. The first was a 100 yard kickoff return by Chris Anton, then came a 60 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Koshion Barfield, and the final score came on a 43 yard punt return for a touchdown by Shawn Davis.
Lane Tech's James Glaesser had a great game with two interceptions and he stripped the ball from a Stevenson player right before the player was going to go in the end zone for a touchdown and the ball ended up going past the end zone to turn the ball over to Lane Tech.
Stevenson will play in the second round next week vs the winner of Schaumburg vs. Fremd. Whereas for Lane, their next game will be a Public League playoff game versus a to be determined team.
