Defense Stands Tall

Joliet (Memorial Stadium) - JC's defense started off the playoffs doing something it's only done twice so far this year, shut down the opponents offense completely.

The Hilltoppers stuffed the Wildcats early and often in this 45-0 rout. JC held Normal (Community West) to just five 1st downs, of which only two were non-penelty related. On the offensive side of the ball JC looked a bit rusty. Five fumbles and numerous penalties plagued the Hillmen for the majority of the game. The defense managed to quell any notion the Normal players had about an upset. Bringing up fourth down punting situation just about every time for the Wildcats.

Referring to another teams offense as looking like a rusty version of Joliet Catholic's, is a complement. All but 2 of the 45 points scored on Friday night were created by the Hilltopper offense. The game entered half time with JC leading 17-0 and any thoughts of an upset ended in the 3rd quarter as J.R. Zwierzynski, Chris Gruber & Jason Lynch all scored.

A sign that the game was definatly going JC's way was right before and during Lynch's TD. JC had backed N.C.W. into their own endzone Once they were forced to punt the snap went over the head of punter Joe Caslow and out the back of the endzone. JC got excellent field position after a the free kick return, but was held to 4th and 1 on the 11. When they opted to go for it and Craig Tomasino hit TE Mike Kolodziej for a TD that would be called back for illegal motion. Now on a 4th & 11 on the 21, Joliet would again go to the air. Tomasino's pass was a bullet over the middle that was tipped by two defenders & Kolodziej, before it fell into Jason Lynch's hands with about two feet between him and the back of the endzone.

Joliet will face the winner of the Taylorville/Chatham (Glennwood) game. If Taylorville wins JC will travel there, just south east of Springfield. If Chatham wins, they will travel to Joliet. Joliet faced Taylorville last year in round one, winning 54-3.
