Week #3 vs. Urbana (H.S.)
9/7/07

Normal Overpowers Urbana

By:  Dan Hyman

The defending division 6A Champion Normal Community Ironmen continued their dominance in the Big 12 Conference, as they handed the Urbana Tigers their third consecutive loss of the season at home Friday night. The Ironmen defeated the Tigers 38-0.

The Ironmen were able to control the tempo of the game throughout as QB Alex Buck finished 3-5 passing with 56 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

Buck connected with 8:22 left in the 1st quarter on a 21 yard strike to WR Austin Kull to give the Ironmen a 7-0 lead early on. He also connected again on a 36 yard TD pass to WR Shawn Cagle later in the half.

Complementing Buck’s passing game was Ironmen tailback Dan Moore who finished with 56 yards on 10 carries and 2 touchdowns. Moore was able to connect on a 10 yard sweep at the end of the first, and again late in the second on a 6 yard dive.

Moore’s second score gave the Ironmen a 31-0 lead at the half.

Normal recorded one more rushing touchdown in the second half, on a 5 yard carry by Dan Moore, giving him 3 touchdowns on the day.

Rather than continuing to play his starters who had physically and strategically overpowered the Tigers in the first half, Normal’s head coach Hud Venerable instead chose to put in his reserves in for the remainder of the second half.

“Hud Venerable is a class act, said Urbana’s Head Coach Mike Hoskins. This was a situation in which they could have run up the score and put 60 or more points on us, but that is not Hud’s style. I’ve know him a long time and he’s a class-act coach.”

At game’s end, the Tigers finished with only 48 total yards of offense, which pales in comparison to Normal’s 210 yards alone in the first half.

The lone bright spot for Urbana was their tailback Antonio Jones who finished with 43 yards on 13 carries.

“I thought we played hard. Our offense needs to improve this week in practice,” said Jones. We’re gonna get it done this week in practice. I think we need to come out at the beginning of every game and play hard all four quarters. I really think we can get it done next week.”

For Normal Community, this marked their third consecutive victory as they remain undefeated at 3-0 atop the Big 12 Conference.

“I think we are making some progress on defense,” said Normal Head Coach Hud Venerable.  We had a real good week of practice. I thought our defense was real aggressive tonight, just like our offense was.”

For Normal, they continue with Big 12 action as they travel to Mattoon to face the undefeated Green Wave in Week 5 action.  Urbana plays at home again, this time against the Bloomington Purple Raiders who come in at 2-1.
