Week #3 vs. Morris (2-1)
QB Britt Davis actually got away from this Morris defender.
Air & Water Show Halt Morris
Riverside - Anyone who has seen the Otto Zeman offense, knows about the air show, but what Morris & the Redskin players weren't ready for was the water part of the show Friday night, in the 44-27 Riverside-Brookfield victory.
While earlier downpours were looking to tilt a game in favor of the visiting Redskins, in this Suburban Prairie Conference crossover game. The only thing that would resemble water would be the Riverside defense, who had Morris' offense sloshing around the entire second half.
Fans who wiped off the wet bleachers and sat down before the game Friday night weren't sure what to expect, but as half time rolled around and the score was 27-24 Morris, many in Riverside had flashbacks to a 2001 playoff match versusJoliet (Catholic)that had seen a 56-50 slugfest knock them out of the championship race. Conversations were beginning to mention the possibility of a 100 point game.
"They did a great job. They came through like champs" head coach Otto Zeman II said of his defenses' performance.
At half time he told the team that "I think we're tiring them out, but it's our defense that's going to determine how far we go."
And the defense didn't disappoint. Senior linebacker Matt Kyrias (6'3 210) picked off a John Goolsby pass to start the 2nd half. That interception wouldn't matter though, as Riverside's QB Britt Davis (sr. 6'3 185), would toss it back to Morris' Nate Condon two plays later.
The Bulldogs D wouldn't take no for an answer though and quickly helped Morris' offense off the field after holding them to 3 & out ending with a Jason Scott (sr. LB 6'2 240) sack to force the punt.
Morris would again intercept a wild Davis pass on 3 & 3 at the Morris 6 yard line this time it would be Eric Edwards (jr. HB/DB 6'1 178) who would get the pick. But the game of pitch and catch between the two teams would turn lethal as Riverside's Conor Hill (sr. 5'11 170) would take a Goolsby interception 55 yards for a Bulldogs score.
While that score put the Bulldogs ahead 30-27, it was two Britt Davis passes that put the nails in the coffin.
On Riverside's next possession and 3:08 left in the third quarter, Davis would hit Demetrius Wilson (jr. 5'7 150) in single coverage at mid field. In a spectacular feat of athleticism he would avoid going down on a shoe string tackle, his knee missing the ground as he planted his hand and picked up enough speed to burn by one more defender before diving while being tackled into the corner of the endzone by another for an incredible 86 yard reception.
Morris feeling the game slipping away put together a drive from their 22 yard line to the 26 of Riverside before Edwards had the ball stripped on a run and recovered by the Bulldogs Keith Swon (sr. LB 6'1 250) with 24 seconds left in the third.
Less than a minute later Riverside was back on the board as Davis hit Joey Coia (jr. WR 6'1 185), who would blaze 81 yards for the last Bulldog TD with 11:47 to go in the final quarter.
Morris, who was mared by penalties all night, including several unsportsman like calls, would give up a saftey after a flag for an illegal block was called in the endzone as Morris was backed up on the 1 yard line.
Morris had 9 penalties for 105 yards in the game.
Coach Zeman would add after the game that "they're [Morris] a super team. So that makes us pretty good then I guess."
Davis would finish 16 of 45 for 485 yards, 6 TDs & 2 interceptions. Coia & Wilson being his main targets. Coia would have 3 catches for 140 & a TD. Wilson would contribute 7 catches for 249 with 4 TDs.
Goolsby would pass for 178 yards a TD & 2 INTs. Edwards would rush for 112 yards with 2 rushing & 1 receiving TD.
