2007 Schedule 8/24 7:30 @ |
2007 Team Preview Open Season on Bears Well it seems like it’s not safe to be a Bear in Illinois any more. If it’s not the NFL’s Chicago Bears who are marked as the team to beat, it’s the Bears up in Lake Zurich who’ve got the red & white circle on their jerseys this year. Second year head coach Bryan Stortz, knows his team marked. After finishing second in the North Suburban Lake Conference and making it all the way to the 7A State Finals before losing to St. Rita, you can guarantee that nobody will be letting Lake Zurich slip by this year. Stortz, might being doing the only thing a team in that situation can do and turn the focus inward. When commenting on the season outlook Stortz said point blank that he hasn’t looked far into the schedule. “We’ve spent the entire summer and these last few weeks trying to get ourselves prepared.” He Said. Getting prepared for a schedule that puts the Bears into a Lions den conference with perennial powerhouse teams Libertyville, Gurnee (Warren) & Stevenson. Along with an opening non-conference game against Fremd is a big task. Although it might not be as big a task as it sounds considering the Bears are bringing back leading rusher Adam Simpson (FB 5’11 195 sr.) 820 yards, 12 TDs & Jon Janus (RB/LB 5’9 185 sr.) who added on another 700 with 10 TDS. Dan Kalcsics (RB 6’ 190 sr.) also seen action in the 3 back set last season and should be a regular in the backfield this season. Dylan Becker (OG 5’9 205 17 sr.) & John Gage (C 5’10 205 sr.) are the two returning starters on the O-line. Coach Stortz, said with a week and a half before their first game, that the quarterback position is still hot contest between junior Tanner Witt & senior Bobby DeLeo. No matter who wins out for the starting job at QB, they’ll still have back the teams leading receiver in Pat Gallagher (6’2 180 sr.). While the Bears front line on defense was lost to graduation, the linebacker core is still in tack. Tyler LaFontaine (6’2 205 sr.), Brent Marks (6’1 190 sr.) & Jon Janus all return. LaFontaine finished second on the team last year with 88 tackles. Kevin Johnson (S 6’1 180 sr.) & Michael Dietrich (CB 6’1 170 sr.) fill in the defensive backfield. John Brewer (DL 6’4 220 jr.) & Franco Nava (DL 6’1 240 jr) seen signifigant time last year as sophomores, at least a 1/3 to half of each game occourding to Stortz. And should help free up linebackers like LaFontaine to add onto his 7 sacks from last season. As far as winning the conference or returning to state Stortz and his staff have been stressing to their kids this point. “We haven’t done anything yet. We’re 0 and 0… We do have a solid team, but that doesn’t mean we automatically win.” Overall he thinks it’s getting through, “Our kids know what it takes to get to the point we did last year. They also realize that this kind of thing doesn’t just happen. There are a lot of things that are involved in that.” by Vincent Johnson
