Week #6 vs.Lemont
(H.S.)5-1 Eric Edwards passes the last Lemont defender on his way to a punt return TD in the 2nd quarter of Morris' 29-7 victory. Dergo Pours It On Lemont - Junior standout John Dergo (RB 5'11 195 jr.) didn't take long to quite down the Lemont crowd, as the packed house had shown up to see the undefeated Injuns possibly upset of one of Illinois' perennial powerhouses. Dergo took the opening kick off back 95 yards for a score which only took 13 seconds off the game clock. You could feel the buzz in the air, as parking an seating for the game in Lemont were full an hour before game time. Players on the Injuns sideline bounced around anxiously, like a kid on Christmas eve, waiting to get what they had wished for for the past month. While a 5 game winning streak may not seem out of the ordinary for Morris, the last time Lemont had even won 5 games was in 2000 when they were 6-4 and that was the only time in the last decade they finished over 500. Lemont's defense helped keep things closer than the Redskins have been use to this year. Morris had been averaging 40 points a game so far this year, but midway through the 4th, Morris was still playing most of the starters. Lemont's defense played well through most of the game. They came up big on a 4th & 1 as Ryan Sidler (DB 5'10 145 sr.) stood Morris' Dergo up, stopping him short of a first down on Morris first full offensive possession. Lemont's last possession before the 4th & 1 stop, ended with a bad snap on a punt for a safety, helping put Morris up 8-0 just barely into the game. Lemont took that momentum and drove down field on the arm of Dan DeBoeuf (QB 6'2 185 jr.) as he would connect with Shawn Morris (WR 6'4 200 sr.) 3 times for 51 yards, the last being an 18 yard TD strike, making it 8-7 Morris. Unfortunately the Lemont special teams play would help give the Redskins all the cushion they needed, as Eric Edwards (RB 6'1 175 sr.) as able to return a punt for a TD with 24 seconds left in the first. Putting Morris up 15-7, all on points gained while on special teams. Dergo would pour on the speed as the rain started to pour. Rambling off touchdown runs of 86 & 43. Dergo, would almost get the hat trick late in the third, as he intercepted a DeBoeuf pass in the end zone and returning it all the way before it was called back on a pass interference penalty. Dergo finished with 229 yards on 20 carries with 2 rushing TDs & a kick return TD. DeBoeuf finished 11 of 23 for 130 yards & a TD. Shawn Morris had 5 receptions for 66 yards & a TD. by Vincent Johnson
