Defense Rules The Game For Both Teams

Oak Lawn - In a game this close, it's the little things that matter. That little thing just might have come in the 2nd quarter when Richards blocked a field goal attempt by T.F. South.

From the start of the game Friday night things looked to be going towards a defensive battle. The Bulldogs were unable to get into the endzone once they made it into the red zone in the first quarter and on two different drives the Bulldogs allowed QB Chris Humbles to get sacked. They managed to walk away with a field goal and the only points allowed in the 1st.

The second quarter was the most exciting of them all. Richards field goal block was a key moment in the game. A fake punt that turned into a big yardage first down for the Rebels when Tom King sprinted down field untouched for a good 10 yards, was another key moment. That play eventually led to a 23 yard TD reception to King from QB Nick Jensen. This gave T.F. a brief lead in the game, but that would disappear soon afterwards as RB Dan Spano would score on rushes of 15 & 2. Richards second touchdown was fueled by a T.F. fumble with just over two minutes left in the half.

The third quarter saw the Rebels come close to scoring but an interception by Donte Ellis around the goal line would stifle the T.F. South drive. T.F. would come back again and scored with the help of a 14 yard run by King, the point after was blocked.

The Rebels played incredible D in the second half, they stopped Richards from even getting a first down. Even with the help of some late game penalties, the Rebels lost the ball on downs with about 2 minutes left used up their last time out.

The game ended in a very unique and suspenseful manner. With under two minutes left and just gaining possession of the ball on the about the 5, Richards elected to take a knee then a delay of game penalty, then a knee again and another penalty, being back all the way to the 1 they used their last time out. After getting the play from the coaches the Bulldogs went to punt formation and hike the ball clear out of the back of the endzone, thus avoiding any block attempt or possible turnover for a TD. The following free kick was promptly down allowing for one more T.F. play which was a 40 yard hanging floater that was batted around at the 20 by at least every member of both teams before it fell to the ground to end the game.
