The Hit List 2004

The "Hit List" is a quick look at numbers and stats from around the state.

Week #13

7
Going into the 5A Semi-Finals, Morris has 3 shutouts for the season. While the Redskins haven't shutout an opponent since week 4, there isn't a coach in the state that wouldn't settle for what they have done on defense, which is allowing no more than 7 points in any game so far this season. As a team Morris has given up just 59 points in 12 games.

5
Number of Chicago Public teams to make the Semi Finals in the IHSA playoffs. Chicago (Lane Tech), 1980,Chicago (Tilden) 1983,Chicago (Robeson) 1985, Chicago (Hubbard) 2000, & nowChicago (Morgan Park) 2004. Robeson remain the only team to make the finals.

Joliet (Catholic)
Best argument this year for why 8 classes is to many. The Hilltoppers have taken out three teams by an average of 58 points. They're first round victory overChicago (Crane)76-0, set the all time record for points scored & margin of victory in a game for the playoffs.

Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East) ,Rolling Meadows& Orland Park (Sandburg)
Best arguments for why 8 classes is just right. All three school made the playoffs, something that almost wouldn't have happened with a 5-4 record with 6 classes. On top of that they all managed to make the quarter finals. Lincoln-Way even managed to knock off 2 top contenders in the states biggest class for their run at the title. Rolling Meadows & Lincoln-Way will be the first ever school to make the finals with 4 losses if they win their respective semi finals games this weekend.

Week #7

7 TDs
Those who frequent the Best of Page may have remembered that in week 2, #1 ranked Lockport (Twp.)'s second year starter & highly recruited QB Jake Christensen threw for 7 TDs against a then rankedBolingbrookteam. He had a repeat of this same feat the following week as well. So one might think that this is a common event in high school football, but before this season that feat has only been accomplished 12 times in state history. So it is with great surprise that it has happened again this season, only this time it was fromRiverside (R.-Brookfield) 's back up QB & sophomore Chris Pesek, who while making his first ever start in place of injured starter Mike Marotta, threw for over 500 yards & 7 TDs. Placing himself in a tie for fourth place on the states all time list for most touchdowns in a game.

171-6
The score of the little town of Freeport versus the City of Rockford. The Pretzels of Freeport (H.S.) have managed to outscore all the teams they've played from Rockford by a score of 171-6 . With their last game againstRockford (Jefferson)attributing to the lone TD given up by the Pretzels. The Pretzels will face the last of the Rockford high schools in week 9 when they take on private schoolRockford (Boylan). Freeport's other high schoolFreeport (Aquin)has no Rockford schools on it's schedule, although they could faceRockford (R. Christian)in the playoffs.

Week #6

247
Total points scored by both Mt. Carmel & Springfield (S.H.G.) through week 5. While both teams are racking up the points SHG is really doing a number on both sides of the ball as they haven't allowed more 45 points so far this season. Helping them out score opponents by 40.4 points a game.

6
Number of teams in the North Suburban (Lake) Conference that could make the playoffs. Teams in the conference made the most of their 4 non-conference games to start the season going a combined 21-3. Two of those losses came at the hands of #3Park Ridge (Maine South)5-0 & #14Naperville Central 5-0.

Week #5

16 of 16
The number of teams from class 5A-8A that played in the state finals over the last 2 years that were in IHSFW.com's Big 30 by week #5.

4
Number of state champions that could be from theChicago Catholic (Blue)Conference this year. #5 Chicago (St. Rita), #12 New Lenox (Providence) & #20 Chicago (Mt. Carmel)are looking to be in 6A. While #18Wilmette (Loyola Academy) is pegged in 7A. In 8A is #29Chicago (Brother Rice). If Providence, who has the smallest actual & football enrollment in the conference could always sneak into 5A if the right teams lose.

7pm
The start time this Saturday for Chicago (Lane Tech)'s game againstChicago (Curie). The game is at Lane Tech. While a 7 pm start time doesn't seem to surprising, it would if you realized that Lane Stadium is still the only stadium on Addison Street in Chicago that still doesn't have lights. The stadium which was built around the 1910's is a classic horse shoe stadium with the seating area starting 10 feet above the field level. The classic cinder track that surrounds the field will help put you in another era for this historical game, believed to be Lane's first night game. Want to see the field with out driving to Chicago? Rent the 1980's movie Wildcats with Woody Harrelson & Goldie Hawn. It was filmed at Lane, or click here.

10
The number of playoff points by #22Peoria (Richwoods)4-0, which is the lowest number of points by any of the undefeated teams in the state.

Week #2
