7A Semi-Finals vs.Belvidere 12-1
Knight-Mare 1st Half Mt. Prospect (Prospect HS) - Belvidere came into Saturday night's 7A Semi-final game undefeated & looking to bring the Bucs football team back to state for the first time since 1994, but the Prospect Knights had a different plan. The Bucs started the day on offense, but problems holding on to the ball, turn the Bucs dream season into a Knight-mare in the 1st half. On the opening kickoff the Bucs had problems holding on to the ball, setting up a very short return and eventually leading to a 3 & out situation setting the Knights up at the Belvidere 35 yard line. Matt Bowman (QB 6'1 185 sr.) would hit Max Cherwin (WR 5'10 170 jr.) in mid stride at about the 15, and Cherwin would take it the rest of the way for a Prospect TD on their very first play from scrimmage. A block PAT by Cris Collier (DE 5'9 170 jr.) would help pump up the Bucs as they were set to take back possession. On Belvidere's second play of their next possession, a fumble on a run would be recovered by Rick Richardson (DL 6' 215 jr.), giving the Knights a 1st & 10 at the Bucs' 21. Evan Daniel (RB 5'9 170 sr.) would get his first of 3 TDs on the night on a 9 yard run just a few plays later. He would rack up 141 yards on 21 carries to lead the Knights in rushing. A penalty on the 2 point conversion would force the Knights to kick and take a 13-0 lead just 2 minutes & 41 seconds in the game. The Bucs looked like they might have been back in the game, as a rouging the punter call helped them not go 3 & out on their 3rd possession. The Bucs would drive down field, fumbling 3 times, before turning over the ball on downs on the Prospect 34. The Bucs would get the ball right back after forcing the Knights to go 3 & out, ending a 60 yard drive with a 5 yard run by Matt Barr (QB 6'2 190 sr.), bring the score closer, 13-6. The Knights would answer back twice on the Bucs touchdown, scoring on a 1 yard Daniel leap over the pile just 2 & a half minutes later & again another 1 yard dive by Daniel with 41 seconds left in the half. An interception at the line by Mike Kriegermeier (DL 6'3 205 sr.) stopped any chance of a last minute score by the Bucs before half & solidified a 27-6 Knights lead. The Bucs came out gunning in the second half, recovering an onside kick and driving 44 yards scoring their second TD of the night on a 1 yard run by fullback Brandon Smaha (6'2 195 sr.) with 7:45 left in the 3rd quarter. The Knights would run the ball down field & run the clock down as well as Bowman and Pat Burnton (WR 6'4 185 sr.) hooked up for a 30 yard TD reception, the Knights last TD of the game. Prospect would make a 28 yard field goal with 11:03 left in the game, but both teams played tough on defense as Prospect ended all hope of a comeback as defensive back Mike Dazzo (5'11 160 jr.) picked off a Barr pass, ending a drive that had seen some progress in the air. The Knights will play next Saturday at 4pm against 10 time state champsChicago (Mt. Carmel), who knocked offEdwardsville (H.S.)27-7 Friday night. by Vincent Johnson
