Combined record of the 2004 state champs. Out of the 8 champs 4 of them are still fighting for a playoff spot. Alexis (United)4-4 ,Lombard (Montini) 5-3, may not seem like quite the surprise since they had made their first ever state finals game last year. But title hunt regularsNew Lenox (Providence)4-4 & Libertyville 5-3 may be a little more of a shock.

With a combined record of 57-7, last years runner ups, have only one team that has lost more than a game,Stockton4-4, other than them, the rest of the 2nd placers are all looking to be top seeds this season once the playoff starts.

Week #6

Number of State Finals teams we've had ranked before week #6 games were played over the last 3 years. With 9 games left to play, the real season starts in week #6. For those of you paying attentionCary (C.-Grove)&Downers Grove (North)were the 2 teams we missed. North had been ranked in week #4, but lost that week and fell from the Big 30 till after week #8.

The current record of opponents thatBreese (Mater Dei)will face to for the rest of the season. The Knights, 5-0, could have the toughest second half of the season schedule in the entire state, as they must beatQuincy (Notre Dame)4-1,St. Joseph (S.J.-Ogden)4-1,Tolono (Unity)5-0 & Mascoutah 4-1. All the games except the Week #9 match up versus Mascoutah, will be home games.

The number of schools who will need to win each and every game from here out, after going 1-4. Teams likePearl City [Eastland-P.C. Coop],Zion (Z.-Benton)& Dixon are all victims of a tough schedules. Z-B who is playing in the North Suburban Conference, Lake division this season and has played four 5-0 teams, two of whom are ranked in the Big 30 , Gurnee (Warren) &Lincolnshire (Stevenson). The Biggest surprises at 1-4 though are; Nashville who was a 3A Semi-finalist at 10-3 & Freeport (H.S.) who was 11-1 in 2004. The Pretzels also haven't lost a regular season game since 2002 and a Northern Illinois (NIC-9) game since 2000.

The number of schools who can officially start their basketball seasons after going 0-5 to start the season. Most schools are made up of programs that have had less than playoff caliber teams over the years, likeBerwyn-Cicero (Morton) & Paris , both teams have never made the playoffs. Other teams such asArgenta (A.-Oreana)who was 9-2 last year are more of a surprise.

Week #4

The number of pointsEast St. Louis (Sr.)2-1, has scored in it's first 3 games. The Flyers have scored more points this year than any other team in the state and more points than 4 dozen teams scored at all last year.

The number of yards IHSFW.com's Week 3 Player of the Week , John Dergo of Morris , rushed for in a 42-7 win over Lemont. In what looked like the week of the running back, #8Chicago (Mt. Carmel)'s Dominic Sulo rushed for 298 yards in their victory over then #20New Lenox (Providence). Providence's total offense yards for the game was 291.

Week #3

0-6
The record of team that the #1 ranked Hilltoppers ofJoliet (Catholic)have faced or will face as of week #3. Chicago (Marist),Lisle (Benet Academy) &Chicago Heights (Marian Catholic) all currently 0-2. With every team in the Hilltoppers schedule being a conference team that means most likely the games will get harder as the season progresses. With Marist playing Benet this week though, at least one of JC's previous opponents will have a win.

12-4
The combined records of teams that won the state title last year. Five teams are still undefeated, 2 teams have lost a game.Lombard (Montini) though is the lone state champ that has yet to win a game. The Broncos, who scheduled two tough opponents for it's first two non-confernce games, in playing #10 Springfield (S.H.G.) 2-0 & 2004 6A Semi-finalist Geneva 1-1.

In contrast, the combined records of the runner up teams from the 2004 state finals, has all but 2 teams undefeated so far this season.

2-0 & 0-2
On different ends of the enrollment spectrum, the smallest school with a football program, meaning every team they play has more kids than they do, Mooseheart , is 2-0. They have 101 students. While the largest school in the state, meaning every one they play will have less students than they do,Berwyn-Cicero (Morton) , is 0-2. They have 7721 students.

Week #2

Number of points scored by Pecatonica in it's game against Kirkland (Hiawatha) . That puts it at a tie for 5th place on the state's all time list for points scored in a game since 1950. The only thing is, the game was called at half-time. The current record for most points is 97, set byOlympia Fields (Rich Central) in 1966 vs.Palos Hills (Stagg).

Number of points scored byEast St. Louis (Sr.)in it's game with national ranked Warren Central of Indianapolis. While that was far more than many expected the Flyers to score, it wasn't enough to win, as the Warriors scored 70 on East St. Louis.

Week #1

The states current streak for the number of regular season victories in a row, goes to 3 different teams. Springfield (S.H.G.) ,Wilmington&Carthage. All 3 teams lost their last regular season game in week 8 of 2001. Carthage could have been the out right leader, but had to forfeit there week 7 & 8 games due to a teachers strike. Their last played game loss was week #6 2001 versus Sciota (Northwestern).

The ranking in the Midwest ofEast St. Louis (Sr.)'s week #1 opponent. No they're not playingJoliet (Catholic), whom polls have at #5, they're up against the Warriors of Warren Central out of Indianapolis. The Warriors are the 2004 5A champs in Indiana. The Warriors will also have a jump on East St. Louis when it comes to game play. Indiana schedules can include up to 15 games in a season since play starts a week earlier than Illinois. Warren Central won their first game 63-13 Franklin Central.

Number of games you can watch opening weekend in a professional football atmosphere. That's right, there will be not just one but three games played this Saturday at the home of the Chicago Bears, Solider Field. The event which is a cross over between the Chicago Public League & the Chicago Catholic League will feature the match ups ofChicago (Morgan Park) vs.Chicago (Mt. Carmel)at 1 pm, Kankakee (McNamara) vs.Chicago (Dunbar)at 3:30 pm and thenOak Park (Fenwick)vs. Chicago (Hubbard) at 7 pm.

About the number of games that will be played at the varsity level this year. With about 550 schools with a football program in Illinois and each one playing a game a week, the rough number of games played by Illinois teams should be about 2025. The number varies when you add in out of state teams that have games against Illinois schools.

Number of losses suffered byJoliet (Catholic), Libertyville & Chicago (Brooks) in the 2004 season. Making them the only undefeated teams to start the 2005 season. Brooks, a member of theChicago Public, Intra-City (South)Conference which isn't eligible for the IHSA playoffs, also didn't play in Chicago's Prep Bowl. Making them the only undefeated without a state championship.

The NCAA statistics on the chances of a high school football player making it to the NFL. Which is good news for those who decided to dream the pig skin dream as opposed to the hoops dream. The odds go up to 10,000 to 1 if you want to make it the the NBA.

Joliet (Catholic)'s record after losing it's final regular season game in 2003 toMundelein (Carmel). It's the longest winning streak in the state right now.

The amount paid by Menomonie High School of Wisconsin to cover the travel expenses of the only team they could find in the Mid-West to play them at home in week #1 of the 2005 season. Menomonie, according to the Dunn County News of Wisconsin, has been struggling to find teams to play them since they've established themselves as a power house. The $2,000 along with pizza to go for the long bus ride home is being given to the Oswego (HS) Panthers. The game will be played at UW Stout.

The number of possible Division I players on the 2005Chicago (Morgan Park) . The Mustang went 12-1 and made it all the way to the 7A Semi-finals before losing 21-14 toCary (C.-Grove)in 2004.
