Crusaders Score Upset Again

Chicago (Gately Stadium) - Let's see if this is understood. The Brother Rice Crusaders were picked to finish fifth in the Chicago Catholic League Blue Division. They were not supposed to repeat the run they had last year. They beat Providence last year, but it was a fluke and it was at Rice. They upset the Mount Carmel Caravan last year, but for the same two reasons. No credit to coach Steve Nye and his advancement of his players and his system.

This year, the Crusaders are on a mission: To repeat the start to last season and to go even further in the IHSA state playoffs. Consider the first part of the mission accomplished. Following a crucial win at Providence, and a dominating defensive performance at home against Loyola, the Crusaders scored another upset win on the road, this time at Gately Stadium against the mighty Caravan of Mount Carmel by a final count of 10-7. And just like last year, it took a defensive play by the Crusaders to seal the game.

A year ago, it was a team defensive effort as they forced the Caravan into three fourth quarter turnovers. This year, the defense rose to the top again as a batted pass from quarterback Caravan QB Dan Daigler turned into a Chuck Manthei interception sealing the win for the Crusaders. This landmark win moved the Crusaders to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in the CCL Blue division, bringing them ever closer to back-to-back titles for the first time in a long time.

After watching the Caravan use a 10-play march to take a 7-0 lead, the Crusaders settled down and went on a marathon march of their own. This march consumed eight plus minutes bridging the first and second quarters and took sixteen plays. Although the Crusaders got only a field goal to cut the lead to 7-3, the drive sent a message to the Caravan loud and clear: If you can do it, we can do it better!

Later in the second quarter, the Crusaders took the lead for good when Scott Linn barrelled over right guard for a three-yard touchdown and a 10-7 advantage. That touchdown would close the scoring for the game and the defense took over, holding the vaunted Caravan running attack at bay and forcing them to throw for most of the remainder of the game.
