Crusaders Defense Throttles Red Hawks

By Brian Snow - RiceNet Announcer/Correspondent

Marist high school - The last time that the Marist RedHawks and the Brother Rice Crusaders met on the gridiron was 2002.  In that game, the Crusaders needed overtime to defeat the pesky Hawks on their way to a state playoff appearance.  Since then, the RedHawks have hovered near the .500 mark and the Crusaders have now become a perennial power.

Before an overflow crowd at Marist Stadium, the Crusaders showed why they have become such a perennial power by showing off the formula that has worked for the last few years:  A timely offense and a very stingy, aggressive defense.

Brother Rice got the party started with a 57-yard scoring drive.  John Ingersoll capped the drive with a 30-yard cross-field to receiver Matt Stahl for a 6-0 lead.

Then the defense showed off.  Jeremy Rhodes picked off his first pass and returned it 40 yards to the Marist 19.  Quintus Johnson finished the ensuing drive with a five-yard touchdown run and a 12-0 lead.  Later in the half, Ingersoll snuck in from one yard out to give the Crusaders a 19-0 lead at intermission.

Rhodes added a second interception, a sack, and five tackles on the night.  Senior LB Kevin Konrath led the defensive charge with 11 tackles.
