Crusaders Outlast Weather, injuries & Friars

A change of venue could not stop Rice. Missing four starters on defense could not slow them down. Not even mother nature could prevent the Brother Rice Crusaders from bouncing back from a tough loss to the Mount Carmel Caravan. After being shut out last Friday, Tim Evans, Paul Gannon and the Crusaders offense exploded and held off the pesky Fenwick Friars for a 41-27 victory to move to 4-1 on the season heading into their clash next Friday night hosting St. Rita.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Crusaders got in gear and ended the drought as Mike Malloy raced 50 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Crusader lead as kicker Mike McQuinlan added the extra point.

Fenwick responded in duplicate thanks to QB Brien Rooney. First, he connected with WR Patrick Tobin on a 41-yard scoring toss and then galloped 11 yards for a rushing TD and a 14-7 Fenwick lead.

Brendan Sheehey put Rice in position to tie the score with a 67-yard kickoff return to the Fenwick 7-yard line and the Crusaders capitalized quickly as senior wide receiver Paul Gannon made a leaping grab over two defenders in the endzone sending the game to the break tied at 14.

Fenwick took a brief 21-14 lead as Eric Bradley scooted in from 67 yards out. But Austin McDonough knotted the game at 21 with a seven yard TD run. The run put the finish on a 69 yard TD drive and then Tim Evans hooked up with Paul Gannon again for a 24-yard touchdown and after three periods, Brother Rice led 28-21.

Fenwick came right back as the fourth quarter began as Dan Mega bulled in from one yard out to cut the lead to 28-27. But that is where the Crusaders defense turned the game around as Alex Annes swooped in and blocked the extra-point attempt.

After an exchange of possession, the defense struck again as they forced a Friar fumble and then Evans and Gannon hooked up for the third time, this time for a 3-yard score to put the Crusaders in control for good at 35-27. Brendan Sheehey concluded the scoring by ripping off a 39-yard scoring run late in the final frame.

Tim Evans finished 10-of-21 passing for 171 yards and three scores, all to Paul Gannon who caught 9 passes for 120 yards and the three TD's.

The Crusaders will host St. Rita on Friday night while the Friars (2-3, 1-1) will travel to DeLaSalle on Saturday afternoon.
